“Born from the term Genesis P-Orridge used to describe Charles Pinion's RED SPIRIT LAKE, A Pulp Video Manifesto (written by Pinion in 1994 under the nom de plume Tonya Cthonic) not only defined Pinion's efforts toward a low-fi video cinema, but also inspired Tony Labat's "Pulp Video" courses at the San Francisco Art Institute. (Tony and his daughter appear briefly in WE AWAIT, peering balefully from the front seat of a white 442 convertible.) The sudden advent of miniDV and non-linear editing softened the frisson of Pulp Video, rendering it a quaint aesthetic posture, but it remains, as Pinion himself puts it, ‘a bug-smear on the windshield of culture’.”
